Besides the London 2012 Olympic Games taking place July 27 – Aug. 12 and the London 2012 Paralympic Games Aug. 29 to Sept. 9, the office of the Mayor of London has been working with the different cultural organizations to create a memorable summer for those of us that have the opportunity to visit this great city.
All 33 London boroughs will host free concerts and performers from both the UK and around the world. If you are the type that likes to plan your day in advance, visit festival.london2012.com or download the london2012.com/mobileapps in order to find events by date and type. However, if you are like me and need a flexible schedule as you run from venue to venue, the best thing to do to discover the city is to stop when you see Mandeville and Wenlock, the London 2012 mascots. As you take your picture with them, read their descriptions to learn why they are adorned the way they are, as there is a reason for how each one was decorated.
Mandeville and Wenlock are located along cultural trails at some of London’s most scenic streets where you can discover hidden gems and find great photo opportunities. Reach out to one of the volunteers wearing the bright purple and pink shirts and get their London Summer of 2012 Map. The map will help you find the key city venues, the National Olympic Houses and the six different discovery walking trails highlighted by Mandeville and Wenlock that range from 2.6 km (1.6 miles) to 4.4 km (2.7 miles).
If you do one of the walking trails, Samsung has several cool apps you should consider downloading like the Samsung Hope Relay app. For every mile you walk, run or cycle using the app, Samsung will donate £1 to charities. The app works in the UK, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Russia and Croatia, but not in the USA. Today I had the opportunity to visit the Yellow trail to explore London’s East End and the Spitalfields Market.
